Infrequent complications could include hoarseness, permanent low calcium and parathyroid levels, or hypothyroidism, in the rare case where the thyroid is taken out.

Neck surgery: decompression surgery relieves the pressure on your spinal cord and nerves.  Lidoderm patch has these side effects: skin irritation, redness, swelling, numbness where the patch is applied.  there are also more serious side effects altough these are less commn.

There is preliminary and quite encouraging studies from use of near identical PTH replacement via sc injection in individuals with permanent hypoparathyroidism.

Low calcium: Temporary or permanent hypocalcemia (low calcium) is one of the possible complications following parathyroid surgery.  Falling calcium levels following parathyroid surgery can cause tingling around the mouth or digits.  Continued drop can lead to spasms in the hands or feet, abdominal cramps, mental status changes, EKG changes and tetanic contractions.

None if 1 is taken.: If an abnormal parathyroid gland is removed there should be no side effects,  if one normal gland is removed during thyroid surgery there also should be no side effects.  If all 4 normal glands are removed a very low blood calcium will occur causing tingling and cramps and rarely seizures.  This can be treated.

Osteoporosis: If an adenoma on the gland develops (usually only in one of the four), there is excess absorption and mobilization of calcium, which can result in enough loss of bone to risk fragility. Check electrolytes: After a major surgery like parathyroidectomy, significant electrolyte chnages can take place presenting as generalized swelling or swellig of the dependent parts of the body. Thyroid function should also be checked. Better see your surgeon for follow up.
