will i gain weight after a hysterectomy? i know there will be hormone issues after my hysterectomy. does this mean i will gain weight? how can i prevent weight gain during recovery?

That : That is a good question.  Women have different responses to the hormonal changes after hysterectomy.  As always, any exercise program you can start once your doctor clears you will help.  Some women can consistently walk a mile every day, some prefer to go to a gym.  Find a nutritional program that is right for you.  While in the hospital, you could ask for a nutritional consult to get advice.  Ask your doctor whether you will need hormone replacement after surgery as this can affect weight gain and loss.  Many women do not have weight gain after surgery but it is good that you are planning ahead for your health.

Healthy eating: Very few dietary supplements have been shown to make any difference with weight loss. A better option is to work on diet and exercise. Make half your meal vegetables and fruits. Go for variety. And keep in mind that potatoes and french fries dont count. choose whole grains & limit refined grains. pick the healthiest sources of protein. Drink lots of water. Stay active.

No: As long as you did not have your ovaries removed, you should not experience any changes in your weight. Some women immediatley after surgery have increased weight due to stored fluids from the inflammatory state that occurs after a surgery, however over the long run, weight gain would not be expected.

Common: It's common after hysterectomy to notice some weight gain.  Immediately after surgery there's weight gain from water retention.  In the weeks after surgery there may be some gain because you're not as active as you were prior to surgery.  Be sure to talk with your doctor about when safe to resume an exercise program. Dont stop trying.: Eat healthfully. Try to eat at least 5 servings of vegetables &amp; 4 of fruit per day. Increase nutritional fiber.  Avoid refined sugar &amp; junk carbohydrates.  Avoid alcohol, sweetened juices, soda &amp; caffeinated beverages.  Aim for 7.5 to 8 hrs of sleep / night. Hydrate w at least 64 oz of water / day. Calories burned must &gt; calories consumed.  Do both cardio &amp; weight training.

6 weeks: Generally you should be able to resume normal activity in 6 weeks. I would start slow and increase the weights over time.

Losing weight: To lose weight, get ur resting metabolism rate done(weight loss centers do this). This determines the total number of calories you need to lose 1-2lbs/week. Decreasing 500cal/day will give you a 1lb wt loss in 1wk; drink water (1/2 your body weight), eat small meals about 150-200cal 2-4x/(depending on your metabolism rate) and 500cal/meal at night: lean protein/veggies; avoid carbs, .

Please see your GP: For an evaluation, to check blood work like thyroid , etc, the hysterectomy should not be the cause of your weight gain.

It might be normal: Both of those weight figures may be a normal body mass index (BMI) for your wife depending on her height and irrespective of the hysterectomy.
