Magnesium=necessary: Magnesium is a water soluble mineral that most people are whole-body deficient in. At high doses, it causes diarrhea.  If the kidneys are compromised in any way, the dose needs to be lower and monitored by a physician.  A RBC magnesium level is the most useful test as serum magnesium is kept at a very steady level.  Magnesium is necessary to 300+ reactions in the body.

Not much: Magnesium citrate is a saline laxative which works by drawing water into the small intestine
even though you will loose some water but it will not cause any significant weight loss, and whatever loss of  water, is replaced pretty soon.Net effect no weight loss.

Recommend you seek a mainstream treatment.

No: Magnesium citrate solution (a liquid) can help with constipation in the same way that Miralax (polyethylene glycol) does.  A magnesium pill though will not be as effective for constipation.  Docusate is a pill that softens stool and can be helpful.  Senna is another pill, a stimulant laxative, and works by increasing bowel activity.  Fiber and fluids, yes, absolutely continue.

Yes ....: Generous (64+ ounces daily) water and fluid intake is your best strategy to deal with constipation.  Including high fiber foods to promote efficient transit through the bowel is also helpful: whole grain cereals, bread, brown rice, vegetables and fruit. A third strategy is daily physical activity such as 30-45 minutes of brisk walking. Put those together, and you should see some results!
