hi, i think i have a cyst just below my left breast. it feels like a lump but im not sure if its water filled or rubbery. its just a little hard. do i need a mammogram?

You need a breast US: Based on your age, I would recommend getting a breast  ultrasound (US) to start. If it's a cyst, it will be clearly shown on breast US.  If it's a mass it will also be shown.  After US, further imaging or treatment can be performed based on what it looks like. In someone young like you, it is most likely a cyst or fibroadenoma.  Both things which are benign. Keep feeling it to see if it changes.

Sounds like...: ...The cyst got larger--this can happen "overnight", often accompanied by significant breast pain.  This can be easily confirmed by an ultrasound +/- needle aspiration; drawing the fluid out can almost-immediately relieve the pain. Please call the doctor who ordered your mammogram--they will either want you to come in or refer you directly to a breast center or breast surgeon.

Not at all.: Breast cysts develop when a milk duct gets obstructed & accumulate fluid, forming a "water-balloon" in the breast.  As many as 1/3 of women between 35-50 will have cysts.  The main problem with cysts is that it is impossible to know if a new lump in the breast is a cyst or a tumor w/o an ultrasound or a needle aspiration.  Therefore, never assume a new lump is a cyst until proven otherwise.

A complex cyst is a cyst with debris (nothing bad) that can sometimes look like a solid nodule.  Usually the radiologist will recommend a 3 or 6 month repeat film to be sure it is not anything concerning.

No treatment: No treatment is needed for a simple cyst.  If it is casing pain t cyst can be drained.

Breast cyst: Breast cysts are classified as simple, complicated, or complex. Breast cysts do not cause scarring. The only reason to treat a breast cyst is if it is causing severe pain or obstructing adjacent breast tissue. The treatment is usually aspiration. If the doctor decides on excisional biopsy, he will remove the cyst wall. Any minimal scars left on the skin should not concern you.

Uncommon: Cysts in the breast are common but rarely "burst".  They can be tender or painful but usually slowly shrink or grow.

Breast cysts: Breast malignancies are generally solid and breast cysts are generally nonmalignant. Your physician and the radiologist confer and decide whether any further imaging or biopsy is advisable. If there is a palpable breast lump, I prefer to have a breast surgeon also render an opinion and be involved for follow-up in these cases.

Yes: A cyst is one of the few masses that can actually go away without intervention.  Never assume a lump is a cyst.  Ultrasound is the most efficient way to determine.

Very: Cystic breasts is the most frequent female benign breast lesion. Up to one-third of women aged 30 to 50 years have cysts in their breasts. The true frequency is probably much greater than the clinically recognized entity, and the prevalence has been estimated to be between 50% and 90%.
