Keep Clean: Keep the fingers clean to prevent infection.  If painful, you may place a cool rag on them, but do not soak them too long as this may lead to skin breakdown and infection.  Monitor them closely; any signs of worsening redness or drainage may indicate infection.  If this happens--or anything else concerning--please have your child evaluated by their pediatrician.

Check thyroid: Wrinkly finger tips are caused by skin swelling. Only the finger tips look wrinkly because parts of the skin are anchored down by collagen so the swelling is uneven. There are many causes for this but hypothyroidism is one that is relatively common and easy to check with a simple and cheap blood test.

Boils: Normal skin bacteria such as Staph is fine on the skin but becomes a problem when it gets under the skin.  Many women get boils after wearing tight panties, particularly if the leg openings have exposed elastic which pulls the hairs. Women who shave can nick the skin or get ingrown hairs which lead to similar eruptions. Also best to avoid use of perfumed soaps if sensitive. Keep clean and dry.

Why not tap water?: Most tap water is perfectly safe to make infant formula with, and likely does not need boiling.  Most city tap water contains adequate fluoride and is comparable to  nursery water.  Bottled water is regulated by the FDA, but mineral content is highly variable, which is somewhat concerning if given to an infant over long periods of time.  Fluoride in water is not necessary until teeth are visible.

Sympathetic  tone: In part circulation and sweating of the hand is controlled & regulated by our sympathetic nerves.  We each carry different sympathetic tone tendencies.   Coffee, cold, stress all can increase sympathetic tone diminishing blood flow in the hand.  Certain conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome when chronic can lead to dryness of the hand skin.

5 minutes: Nearly all organisms will die in boiling water for 5 min. Longer boiling may be needed at high altitudes.

On The Bottle Again?: If taken from the Ganges River I'd advise that you do. But most commercially bottled water is OK. My grandfather always boiled the tap water to get rid of the chlorine in it but as far as I know most bottled water doesn't have that, or fluoride in it. No harm in boiling it though, as long as it's body temperature or less when given to the baby.

Safer: Boiling water for at least 2 minutes and cooling for 30 minutes prior to adding powdered formula is recommended to decrease bacteria until at least 4 months of age. All the best.
