Many causes: There are many causes for repeatedly waking up at night. Short awakenings without difficulty falling back to sleep is not worrisome. Depression, sleep apnea, alcohol in the evening, certain medicines, poor sleep habits, too much time in bed, are some other causes.

Inflammation in AM: May be worse possibly because the pain med you took at bed time has worn off. Also body's natural anti-inflammatory steroids are at their lowest level during the night. With osteo-arthritis, the lack of movement allows joints & muscles to stiffen; pain improves once movement is restored.

This condition can lead to a lot of other problems like high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, low hormone production, so you need to find out if that's the cause.

No one can guess: Your self-knowledge might not even be sufficient to get it right so anyone else has no chance. You'd be wise to find a psychotherapist to discuss things with and together the issue might become clear. It's the best first step rather than going straight to a pill.
