i took virtussin approximately 3 hrs ago and it has not helped my cough.   i'm considering taking nyquil but need to know when it would be safe to do ?

At least 6 hours: Interval is needed to clear the codeine in Virtussin from your system, if not 8 hours. Nyquil contains an antihistaminic which would interact with the codeine. Moreover, codeine at times can cause spasm of the airways causing more cough, that's why it didn't help to start with, if you are really suffering call your doctor or go to urgent care for management, good luck

No: Combination isn't advisable, benadryl (diphenhydramine) may increase CNS depressive effects of virtussin, better see your doctor if the cough is really bothersome, good luck

Not recommended: both of these drugs contain opioids and adding them together increases their risks.  The prescribing doctor or your pharmacist are better sources for information on this, since they will know your health history and use of medications.  Adding them together, particularly if combined with other CNS depressant drugs, including alcohol, can lead to sedation.  Generally, do not drive on these meds.

Not predictable: Virtussin is a cough syrup containing codeine, which is a narcotic opiate. Whether it is detected on a drug screen depends on each individual's body, on how much was taken, on when it was taken, on the quality of the test, on the diluteness of the urine, on pure luck, etc...
If the person is taking the medicine appropriately, no worries. Otherwise, stop using the stuff, and then no worries.

NO: If it is the virtussin with codeine you are taking too much medicine.This already guaifenesin and psuedoephridine in it. There are similar products in the nyquil. If your cough is that bad you need to see your doctor

Some people use promethazine to mix party drug concoctions, meaning doctors are hesitant to prescribe it because some people are using it as a party drug.

Virtussin AC vs DAC: It's always a good idea to tell prescribing doc everything about your health &amp; all that you're taking so that s/he can prescribe (if necessary) safely for you. Both Virtussin AC &amp; Virtussin DAC contain codeine which is a weak narcotic to suppress cough. Both also contain guaifenesin which is an expectorant. Virtussin DAC also contains decongestant which can increase blood pressure but AC doesn't.

Usually can do that: Virtussin AC is like Robitussin AC, which is guaifenesin plus codeine. Adding a dose of dextromethorphan (DM) would be like taking the over-the-counter Robitussin DM (guaifenesin and dextromethorphan) plus a bit of prescription codeine. Of course, each patient is different, with various reasons for coughing. That means one should ask his own doctor about what to do when a cough won't go away, or recurs, or worsens.

about 4 weeks since i was diagnosed with bronchitis. the cough is bad, makes my chest hurt and is continuous. sob, muscle pain, fatigue and feel terrible. on inhaler and virtussin. when does this become a problem? do i need a pulmonologist yet?

Mgt: If you have a fever, pneumonia may contribute to the symptoms.
A low dose of steroid, may help to reduce lung inflammation following a bronchitic infection. Most are viral illnesses, but I would recommend seeing your PCP.
