Age ??: Early infancy is marked by marked sensitivity to irritants ; dependence on narrow nasal passages for breathing. Later childhood employs mouth breathing to bypass much of the congestion. I hate Vicks steam; consider it air pollution. A lifestyle audit to eliminate any odors/irritants in a kids sleeping area + humidity or steam as long as the measured humidity.

Depends: You don't state the age. Sleep cough does not necessarily indicate infection. Cough is a reflex and can be initiated by an irritable nercous system. If bottle fed try nutramigen. If older, remove all forms of sugar, all this assumes that your baby does not have fever or any indication of infection.

I don't advise it: This product is marketed with the idea that stinky medicine smell is therapeutic. It replicates the aroma  therapy indian tribes uses in sweat lodges with pine pitch. I don't recommend it for kids under 2 as the smell often aggravates congestion.

verymild irritation: Nothing to worry about. Best to close your eyes if you are bothered.

i put vicks liquid vapor in my 9 month old humidifier now sometimes she has a cough that makes her gasp for air. or could it be my moms smoking ?

Or the Vick's: Get rid of the VIck's, this can trigger asthma in babies, we don't recommend it for this reason.  Return it and put the money in her college fund!  Your mom's smoking is a certain contributor to cough as well. Exposure to smoke will cause her to get more viral illnesses and be more likely to have chronic cough and respiratory troubles!  She must decide to quit on her own, but show her this answer!

Mgt: If you have chest tightness,I would recommend having an evaluation for asthma. You may need an inhaler.

See the doctor today: Pertussis or other bacterial laryngotracheitis infection may be present, and this has gone on long enough. Pneumonia is also possible at this point, and of course, these problems are serious.

i have a dry cough and burning lungs because i inhaled humidifier smoke (which had essential oils) through my mouth and choked on the vapor. i wanted to know why i am experiencing just these symptoms and what it may be?

: I don’t (and I’ll bet you don’t) really know what “essential oils” are. You’re probably inhaling moderately irritating chemicals that are irritating your bronchial tubes. Usually doesn’t cause permanent damage (but, of course, sometimes they do). Check with the manufacturer - I’m sure they’ll be happy to tell you - Ha)

Shots: Giving Tylenol (acetaminophen) may be helpful. There are also topical numbing medications, such as EMLA that may help. All the best and I hope he feels better soon.

does a humidifier help an infant with blocked nose?

Accepted Answer

Not much: It may be helpful in very dry environments but seldom makes much difference. Nasal congestion is aggravated by dust/fumes/smoke/irritants &amp; removing them from their sleeping area does the most good. Actively washing out their nasal passages with saline give short term benefits.
