Your mom's smoking is a certain contributor to cough as well. Exposure to smoke will cause her to get more viral illnesses and be more likely to have chronic cough and respiratory troubles! She must decide to quit on her own, but show her this answer!

Smoking: This is more likely from the smoke inhalation. The easy way to find out is to stop the exposure to smoke and see if the cough goes away.

Hard to say: The gasp is not specific and usually represents the rapid in flow of air after a kid coughs in rapid sequence. Exposure to any smoker smell is well known to double or triple a kids number of respiratory illnesses. I put Vicks odor in the same irritant category and never use it under school age.If the kid has stopped playing and is feeding less, I would have her seen.
