Here are some...: It is a good habit to ask your prescribing doc for this sort of questions since s/he knows more about your individual clinical profile. However, Vesicare as one of antimuscarinic agent may over-express its intended effects for ease urinary urgency but resulting in unbearable dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision, change in mentation, etc.

Depends on diagnosis: There are a number of other vesicare-like medication that you can try.  The nighttime urination that you struggle with could be due to any number of issues, so be patient with your doctor as they try to help you.  If you are taking any herbal treatment, you may want to consider cutting back on their intake.  Best of luck.

Safe medication : Overall this is a very safe medication.  The main side effects are dry mouth and constipation.  Serious side effects or allergic reactions are very rare

Overactive bladder: Many medications available. Oxybutynin ER available in generic form &amp; should be covered. Tolterodine might also be covered. If not covered U can appeal if oxybutynin was not suitable for you. Check with your insurance &amp; discuss with your Dr.. Side effects for all these medications included constipation &amp; dry mouth

Yes: Vesicare (solifenacin) will often improve an irritable(over active) bladder, but not stress incontinence. Many patients have a mixture of both. Bladder training will be helpful for irritable bladder and pelvic floor exercises will help stress incontinence.

why does vesicare (solifenacin) take so long to work?

Ought be in few days: Possible that your dose is too low, some respond to 5mg/day, others 10mg or more/day. Discuss with your Dr., she/he may advise increasing dose if no effect after 10-14 days. You might possibly be a non responder to Vesicare (solifenacin) but may respond to Oxybutynin ER 10, 15, 20 or 30mg/day. Dry mouth, common side effect of all anticholinergic medications, would indicate that you are on enough medication.

Might need more time: I would give it another week and then if it doesn't work I would first recommend seeing a urologist for an evaluation. If an over active bladder is the diagnosis then could try another drug or look into Botox injections or interstim

Accepted Answer

No: No - certain tablets are designed for a "timed" release. By cutting the tablet, you are destroying the mechanism and would absorb all of the 5 mg at once:  you probsbly wouldn't like the exacerbated side effects, and would be disappointed in its short duration of activity otherwise.

Same time. : Usually medication is taken once daily.    Unless your doctor prescribed it for twice daily.   Feel free to call your PCP for clarification on how to take your medication.
