Anxiety treatment: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssris) and serotonine reuptake inhibitors (snris) together with Pregabalin are actually considered by international guidelines as the first-line choice for generalized anxiety disorder (gad) treatment. However, 50% of gad patients have poor response to first-line treatments (buoli et al 2013)  quetiapine seems to have the most robust evidence  of efficacy.

Valium: The metabolites of valium can stay in your system for weeks, even without taking other drugs.  As for other drugs, they could lengthen that time even more, depending on what they were.

Yes: You can taper as slowly as you are comfortable with in consultation with your doctor.  While tapering, it is a good idea to learn other techniques for dealing with anxiety and panic.  Consider seeing a therapist to help you with this.

Difficult to tell: I will be unable to tell you for your specific case. In theory exposure to valium could change the number and efficiency of certain receptors in the brain which are building blocks to your brain chemistry. This is an interesting question and there is active research going on around this. Your doctor may be able to give you a more specific answer based on your history (duration and dosage).

Anxiety: Prozac (fluoxetine) can be used long-term. I try to avoid long -term use of benzodiazapines. What are you doing besides taking medication? Cognitive Behavioral therapy or psychotherapy can be effective. Aim for daily exercise, 8 hours of sleep per night &amp; good nutrition w 5 servings of veggies &amp; 4 of fruit per day. Try tai chi, yoga, Qi Gong, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises &amp; meditation

i have valium dispensed 3/26/13 and it says to discard 3/26/14...i have been experiencing high bouts of anxiety lately and unfortunately, i don't have the money to fulfill my new script.  would it be safe to take and for how much longer can i save and/or

Unwise.
Unwise: You are proposing self-medicating, using leftover medicine. The medicine itself may work less well or as well.  But you need to find treatment with a professional for your anxiety, perhaps a return to the same prescriber.

Anxiety can feel bad: Valium is an anti-anxiety agent.Many persons with depression also suffer from anxiety &amp; feeling anxious can make the depressive (&amp; other symptoms) feel worse. Valium &amp; its cousins generally do not treat depression directly.Valium specifically can be dangerous long term as it has active by products that hang around,accumulate &amp; can be toxic. Please continue to work with your doc. Feel better!
