i have a prescription of valacyclovir that has expired. can i get a prescription through healthtap?

Maybe not: If your bells' palsy is caused by the reactivation of chicken-pox virus(shingle) or herpes simplex (unusual), Valtrex (valacyclovir) may help but probably won't hinder healing if not taken. Acyclovir is an alternative which is very cheap--less than 20 bucks for 10 days. May need to check for lyme disease too. Please consult doc for re-eval and possible change of med. Good luck.

i have had shingles 4 times on my face area. i am only 27. dr just keeps prescription valtrex (valacyclovir) and nothing more. i worry about my immune system. what 2 ask dr?

Shingles: Are you sure that you had shingles? (due to varicella zoster virus)  it is unusual to get it twice unless your immune system is depressed. However it would be likely to have recurrent bouts of herpes simplex in the same area.  When a new bout develops ask your doctor to culture the blisters for laboratory identification of the virus. The treatments are the same but the implications for you health.

May need suppression: If you are having outbreaks twice a month despite using Valtrex (valacyclovir) pills and ointment when you first feel an outbreak starting, you probably need to take Valtrex (valacyclovir) or another pill on a daily basis to try and suppress the outbreaks.  Patients can take Valtrex (valacyclovir) pills for up to a year every day. After 1 year you can decide with your doctor if you need to continue or if you can stop. Talk to your doctor.

Wait: Wait till the lesion is clear entirely.  You should not have any evidence of infection otherwise.  Even without a lesion transmission is possible though much less likely.

Early application!: That's a typical prescription. It works best when taken at the first sign of the outbreak.  It is not a miracle drug. It merely helps the sores heal faster, keeps new sores from forming, and decreases pain/itching. This medication may also help reduce how long pain remains after the sores heal.

Antiviral treatment: There is 'one level higher' in terms of antiviral treatment for shingles -&amp; that's intravenous acyclovir. It's heavy duty stuff and you would need to go to the ER to get that going. The real question is though, is that 'bump' at all related to shingles Y/N.
