my uti won't go away? i've been on two different antibiotics but i still have this thing. would a urine culture be my best bet?

Urine culture always: Culture with sensitivities is always advisable as part of optimal management of UTIs. This both identifies type of bacteria causing UTI &amp; which antibiotics will be either effective or not. Meaning whether bacteria are sensitive or resistant to specific antibiotics. You certainly should get urine culture if not yet obtained.

Infectious disease: If you still have symptoms after completing 7 days of the new antibiotic it might be beneficial to have a new culture obtained.  On occasion antibiotics treating one organism will enable growth of a different bacteria or fungus.  If infections persist an evaluation by a urologist may reveal a reason/cause for the infections.

UTI Infection: This is a difficult question to answer because i don't know if a urine culture was taken before you started treatment and because you did not indicate what antibiotic you are taking.  I would suggest you check with your physician to order a urine culture and sensitivity .  That way the most appropriate antibiotic can be prescribed.

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim): Try the antibiotic bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim).  It works really well for uti.  I hope you are not allergic to this medication.   Talk to your ob/gyn good luck.

Probably not a UTI: if repeated course of antibiotics have not relieved the symptoms then it may not be a UTI or there may be a reason why the infection is hard to treat.   You should consult with a Urogynecologist or female urologist.    I hope this helps.

is it safe to let a uti go away on its own without antibiotics? i am almost positive i have had a uti for the past several days but really don't want to have to be on antibiotics if possible?

UTI treatment: It would be in your best interest to be treated as most, if not all, UTI's do not go away on their own.   With current antibiotics you might be able to be treated with as little as 3-5 days of medication, and this is typically well tolerated. Unless there is a specifici reason for not taking antibiotics, such as an allergy, a short course should be sufficient in a young woman

Possible: If the UTI is attacked head on with forced fluids and you have a good immune response, it is possible to flush out the bactreia in the bladder and the body wins the battle.  I would not count on this.  If you have burning, pain, frequency of urination, need to go immediately, and cerainly if fever, back pain, nausea, chills or vomiting, get seen right away for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

UTI: Varies with the organism, type of UTI (lower vs. Upper tract, etc.), the antibiotic employed, the immune status of the patient and a variety of other factors.  Symptomatically it should begin to resolve in 24-48 hours if the organism causing it is sensitive to the antibiotic used.

In a day.: If the appropriate antibiotic was chosen, you should start to feel better, with pain abating within 24 hours. If this doesn't happen, inform your prescribing physician.
