Diagnosing UTI: Group D strep and similar strep are normal in the vagina and can contaminate urine. But in a clean sample, GDS is not normal in urine, and it can cause UTI. Symptoms alone don't diagnose UTI. If true UTI, you would have increased WBC in urine (or positive leukocyte esterase dipstick) and culture showing over 10,000 GDS per ml. If so, you need treatment for UTI. Ask for infectious disease consult.

i took plan b a week ago and i'm now spotting, and two days ago i started having really bad uti symptoms. could this mean the plan b didn't work?

Spotting could be: a side effect.  If there is a UTI it should not be due to Plan B. Potential side effects w emergency contraception includes menstrual flow changes (spotting, bleeding, early or late period), nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, headache, breast tenderness &amp; abdominal pain or cramps. Take pregnancy test &amp; notify dr if your period is 7 or &gt; days late.

Workup required: Further work up is likely required at this point. Sediment in the urine is never normal and may be a sign of a more serious condition that should be identified as soon as possible. Please seek in-person care, the work up of urine sediment is complex and requires close follow up.

: There may have been no need for treatment. Ureaplasma urealyticum is a normal bacteria in the genital tract; some strains can cause nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) in men, but no symptoms or disease is known in women. You can expect a future UU test to be positive again; it almost always comes back. Doxy doesn't "interfere" with STD testing, except by curing true STDs like chlamydia.

: Although more detail is needed, by far the most likely answer is that you do not have a UTI; something else is causing your symptoms. Specialty care might make sense:  discuss with your primary physician whether it would be best to see an infectious diseases specialist, urologist, or perhaps a gyn who specializes in infections. It may never show up: Utis  is a clinical diagnosis - that means for a physician, we rely mainly on the patient's symptoms (pain on urination, hesitancy, frequency, flank/supra pubic pain) to make a dx. In many cases, we can grow and isolate the offending organism in the lab in <24hrs.. In other cases, it is much harder to do this (eg chlamydia, ureaplasma, mycoplasma) - sometimes resulting in a negative culture.
