Need Urologic workUP: Recurrent UTIs as described by you symptomatic and recurring after couple of weeks at age 23 needs a complete urological work up including imaging of whole urinary tract with CAT Scan and if indicated may need Cystoscopy

i had a uti treated 2 weeks ago and have had pelvic discomfort again. could it have come back?

Accepted Answer

Possibly.: If your UTI symptoms completely resolved on treatment and have returned, it is possible that you are now reinfected or were incompletely treated. Go back and get another urinalysis & culture. This should show the cause & the appropriate antibiotic. Further workup should reveal a cause for recurrent utis. If negative for infection, there could be other causes for your pelvic discomfort.

ive been on vagifem and nightly  antibiotics for uti for several years.  i now use vagifem twice a week but uti has come back. ive got rid of it with a course of antibiotics but is it safe to increase vagifem to 3/4 times a week permanently?

Estrogen alone ?'s: Vagifem is an estrogen preparation, and increasing the dosage will contribute significantly to adverse potential effects such as clotting and/or uterine cancer.  Using more frequent Vagifem will not prevent UTI's.  Ask your gyn for a referral to a urologist, to address more common treatments for UTI's .

uti like symptoms (burning, frequent urination, etc) almost every other week, but urine cultures come back clean. plus weight gain, almost 20 pounds in less than a month . could this be an issue with the kidneys?? std tests also came back negative?

: Kidney disease only causes weight gain if you have fluid retention which is commonly manifesting as leg edema. It's rare for a 20# weight gain in less than a month other than an acute fluid retention. Dysuria, i.e. frequency and burning urination, is not a symptom of kidney disease if there is no infection. Cystoscopy may be indicated for finding the cause of non-infectious, persistent dysuria.

hi i have been having burning sensation on my penis/ meatus formonths and have come back neg for std and uti. is it possible trimethoprim antibiotics are causing a false negative result for bacterial std/uti ? as i finished 2 weeks before my last tes?

: The symptoms you describe are not typical for any STD. Trimethoprim is not active against most STDs and probably had no effect on your test results. Australia's federally funded sexual health centres are the world's best network of expert STD/HIV clinics. If you remain concerned, you won't go wrong with advice from your nearest SHC. Good luck.

No symptoms: Basically precludes a UTI unless you have some neurologic condition that may prevent you with recognizine/manifesting classic UTI symptoms like painful urination.  But if you also fail to have urinary frequency and/or urgency or suprapubic(in the area of the bladder) pain, then look elsewhere besides a UTI.

UTI: Urinary urgency, frequency, feelings of incomplete emptying, burning with the begining of the stream, pain in the lower abdomen. You need to have a urine culture and sensitivity in order to detect the bacteria causing the problem and determine what antibiotic can kill it. If you have frequent bladder infections >2 per year, you need to be evaluated.

Culture: Get a urine culture after completion of the precribed course of antibiotics.

UTI: Does every culture grow bacteria?   if not, it can be interstitial cystitis - an inflammatory condition with symptoms of UTI but negative cultures. if it is UTI  taking cranberry pills  2-3 a day may prevent  infections as it prevents wall adhesion. Hygiene practices , washing before sex, ( both parties),  urinating before and after sex , hydration to keep kidneys flushed.  f/u/ w urogynecology

Ans: Well what kind of diet do you have?  You could try drinking cranberry juice. But also may be a hygiene issue or another vaginal issue. Discuss symptoms I detail with your doctor
