however - thyroid issues are probably the least of your worries if there is methamphetamine involved.  I would get off of it or get help.

: Meth is a stimulant and causes skin reactions from frequent sweating and dried leathery changes can occur.  Your picking and scratching of your skin, which is not uncommon in frequent meth use,  causes excoriations and scabbing.

The destructive drug: You don't want any judgmental answer; but as a physician, i don't judge. But i can't comment without telling you that there are grave medical dangers to your meth use. It adversely affects the brain --exposes you to significant emotional+cognitive problems. Arrhythmias, increased blood pressure, carotid artery dissections, leading to neck pain and severe stroke. Tremors can also lead to neck pain.

Appreciate open &amp;...: directness of the question.  Happy to provide an answer, that may not be as concrete.  For one it depends on how bad are the drinking and past drug problems.  These symptoms could certainly be a non serious nerve irritation but also may be cardiomyopathy from alcohol or serious heart attack warning signs from meth. So without a complete evaluation, this could be a serious condition.

Ambiguous: Not specifically, But it will affect all the functions in your body that are affected by thyroid hormone.  Why do you ask? What are your specific concerns?

No: but that's the least of your problems. If you're smoking methamphetamine you must have a death wish. You won't need your Synthroid (thyroxine) at all after you're dead.

No: Thyroid cancer and/or its removal will have no impact on positivity of drug testing in any significant way.  Neither methamphetamine or Methadone (not sure which meth you mean) will stay positive in urine or blood, but hair testing can detect drug use 6 months earlier if the hair is long enough.

I don't know what: having a thyroid cancer removed would have to do with your methamphetamine problem, but I don't think they are related, and one has nothing to do with the other. Methamphetamine is rapidly metabolized and excreted, and usually drug tests are negative 3-5 days after last use. It cannot be positive in urine 6 months later, but hair testing can detect it for that long or longer, depending on length.

i'm having thyroid surgery & have been a crystal meth user for over 15 years. i plan on getting clean 3-4 days before my surgery; is this enough time?

Accepted Answer

Tell your surgeon: about your crystal meth use and arrange for medically supervised detox.  Chronic meth use affects so many functions that surgery will not be safe until you have been able to fully recover.

Yes: An overactive thyroid can cause dizziness by causing the heart to race. An underactive thyroid may cause dizziness by causing the heart to run too slowly.
