Proven vs unproven: By definition, "alternative" is different than modern western medicine.  Generally any drug, herb, treatment, or procedure that stands up to rigorous scientific scrutiny is included in modern medicine.  The problem is that many alternative practices, herbs etc do not stand up to scientific scrutiny and cannot be shown to work. They therefore remain "alternative".   Be careful and watch your wallet.

Tape worm: Soft stool and a lot of gas are not specific for tape worm infestation, although, they can be present in such case, too. White particles of a rice grain size without movement -- hard to tell. I've never seen in the stool, but collect and ask your doc to order ova and parasite test. The lab will tell you.

Pieces in stool: Could be undigested food. Corn peanuts carrots beans are hard to digest.  This does occur from time to time. If occurring all the time , associated with other changes like diarrhea/ constipation, dark stools, abdominal pain   discuss with gastroentrologist

CHOs: Complex carbohydrates may not get well digested. Can try beano product to help digest those . Avoid sugarless gum, candy, carbonated beverages gluten issues would occur with white bread too. Celiac sptue possible but unlikely. Bring diet diary and talk with doctor. Maybe some testing, or not.

Whole fiber: White rice has been associated with a small increased risk for diabetes ( about 13%) and brown rice has been associated with a similar decrease risk for developing diabetes ( about 14%).  No one know for sure why, but it may have to do with the whole grain in brown rice.  Eating whole grains is healthier for you than eating processed grains.

The whole grains have fiber and nutrients that the processing removes. Refined grain products are not good for anyone, including diabetics. Sugar is not added to grains in the refining process, however; whole grains have as much starch.

Various causes: Even though your father appears to be sleeping 10 hours, it doesn't seem like the sleep is very effective. Various disorders can affect sleep from sleep apnea, to restless legs, to side effects of medications, etc. He should see his doctor who can ask the proper questions about sleep, and if necessary order a sleep study or have him consult with a physician with expertise in sleep.
