A common choice: Rice cereal is a common early solid due to its low frequency of allergic reactions. The actual first solid may be something mashed up from the dinner table. I encourage parents to only try the common staple foods they normally use.

What is the deal with white rice cereal?

There is no deal...: It is rather a safe baby food! it is just that the rice cereal is easy to mix with milk, or can be eaten by itself with decent taste, and most babies tend to do well with it...It does not cause much problem at all and I have never seen or know of any baby being allergic to rice cereal...Otherwise, i don't know of any other deal with rice cereal...Any problem/concern, consult doc...Good luck.
