Keep free &amp; elevate: Staying in a position for a prolonged period can cause a sprained ankle to feel stiff and aggravate pain. You can try keeping the ankle out from under the covers so it's not "restricted" or could try elevating it up on a couple pillows while sleeping - elevation also helps with relieving swelling and overall pain.

Exam/x-ray: to rule out chip fracture. You will need an ankle support and if severe, crutches or a walking shoe or cast. See an orthopedic expert.

Ankle sprain: With any severe ankle injury you will develop swelling.  Because of gravity a lot of the swelling can end up in the foot which can limit the amount of range of motion in your toes.

Normal: Sprain are actually harder and longer to heal than fractures.  Sprains are ruptured muscle fibers that bleed into the belly of the sprained muscle and cause swelling and pain.  The problem is that in order to heal, the muscle can't be totally immobilized as can a bone (i.e. via cast or fixation).  It will take time.

See your doctor: The toe dysfunction may be related to your immobilization. However, this is a challenging question to answer without knowing more about your injury and examining you. Rehab/physical therapy is imperative after just about every ankle sprain. There's a good chance that rehab. Will also get those toes moving again.

Nerve impingement: Unlikely, that the fibular bone moved to pinch a nerve.  The peroneal nerve (superficial peroneal nerve) is located in the skin and can be impinged through swelling resulting from an ankle sprain.  The bone, ligaments, muscle, tendons are deeper than the skin, but the swelling associated with injury can cause shooting pain, burning, tingling, and numbness.  Hope this helps.

Shoulder: Could be bursitis try ibuprofen 800mg 3 times a day for 4-5days with food and low heating pad.  Try to give it a rest

Brace : As long as there is no ligament tear( checked by a doctor) and if it is sprain, the discomfort and angular ion should get better. Key is that there should be no apparent or hidden injury, as that might need more treatment than just a brace n rest with ice pak application.

P.R.I.C.E.: After an acute ankle sprain the rule is price. Protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. This will help to reduce the swelling, but you have to be proactive and consistent.
 Stay off the ankle, and reduce activity which causes the ligaments to 'stretch' out. You want to protect the structures, and keep the ice on through the first week. Physical therapy can help a great deal as well.
