Cleft lip: It is possible. Although this occurs in earlier stages. For now, you should just wait and see. Hopefully your child won't have one. But even so, there are many good surgeons and centers that can correct the problem.

See specialist: Modern ultasounography can accurately identify a birth defect (split) of the lip ("cleft lip"), as long as the baby cooperates by not hiding it's face. Your OB will probably refer you to either a genetics counsellor and/or a pediatric plastic surgeon for more information about what cleft lip and cleft palate (a split in the roof of the mouth)are and how they are managed after birth.

No: Cleft lip must be repaired surgically but there are some experiments in treating this in-utero or before the baby is born.  This results in a scarless repair.

Not uncommon: Cleft lip is one of the most common congenital defects occurring in 1:700 live births.  It is very treatable by surgical means and most children are able to live full lives.  Your doctor should be able to refer you to support groups for parents in this position.  It is an advantage to know about the condition before the child is born so plans can be made.

Depends on variables: Facial and palatal structures form over the 5th-10th weeks and clefting in either or both structures is evident during this process. Depending on the skill and equipment of the ultrasound tech, the cleft lip and palate may be seen. A cleft lip can occur without a cleft palate as can the opposite. Some minor clefting is hard to detect until delivery.

Depending : Depending on what your nose and lip look like and what your goals are, revision surgery may be possible. It isn't uncommon to need scar revision for prior cleft lip surgery. In other cases volume deficiencies need to be addressed as well.

Yes: Cleft lip may be detected with ultrasound beginning around the 18th week of pregnancy. As the fetus continues developing, it may be easier to accurately diagnose a cleft lip. Cleft palate that occurs on its own is more difficult to diagnose using ultrasound, since it can be difficult to see inside the fetus' mouth.

: The genetics of lip only and lip+palate are different  so the do occur as separate issues. Lip clefts alone are easier to work with than lip+palate. I am sorry this has happened, but it is manageable. Many successful Hollywood actors have the lip defect. Get yourself referred to a craniofacial team that can help you understand the work ahead.
