can you tell me can lymphoma be detected by ultrasound?

Yes and no: Ultrasound can be a robust diagnostic tool. However, lymphoma is a tissue diagnosis. Meaning an ultrasound could clearly identify an enlarged lymph node say in the groin and it could help guide a biopsy of the suspicious lymph node.  Ultrasound alone might raise the suspicion but would not be diagnostic nor adequate for staging.  Tissue is the issue ultimately.

Lymphadenopathy: you may see lymph nodes enlargement ,and /or  spleen enlargement. but you can not tell what is the cause of the organ enlargement. you would need tissue biopsy to establish a diagnosis.

can normal appearing lymph nodes on ultrasound still contain lymphoma? have multiple widespread small nodes, all firm was told before scan felt concerning for low grade, gradual increasing number over last 9 months but not really growing in size?

: We can not tell a Lymphoma in small lymph nodes unless the lymph nodes are growing in size. Unless the lymph node size is bigger than 1.5-2cm, I would not consider a lymphoma to be causing your palpable lymph nodes.
You can monitor the size changes in your neck and seek medical advice if the lymph nodes start to increase in size to more than 2Cm.

Lymph nodes: Lymphadenopathy without an obvious cause after the history and physical examination presents a diagnostic dilemma. The cause of lymphadenopathy is often obvious after a complete history and physical exam done by a physician. A biopsy is rarely needed. The upper limit in size of a normal cervical lymph node is 10-15 mm.

1cm mobile enlarged node in neck for a year and half. had ultrasound 1yr ago was normal. node is smaller but still here. is 1 and a half years enough to rule out lymphoma? would it have grown by now

Normal: If the lymph node is even smaller now, it sounds like a normal lymph node. I see it can create anxiety, otherwise, and there is most of the time a reason, such as personal or close family members. Talk to your doc about your concerns.

i have 3 supraclavicular lymph nodes 1cm in size for a year. can just an ultrasound detect lymphoma or should i push for a biopsy?

Need eval: 1 cm is the cutoff usually to say concerning or not but be on the safe side. Causes can be a normal variant (i.e. large from previous infection etc.), current inflammatory process or malignancy. Cancer is higher if the nodes are larger in size and age is above 40. If not, that doesn't rule out cancer. I recommend you get examined and be up to date on screening exams. US alone won't detect lymphoma

i'm having an ultrasound scan on my neck an was wondering would an ultrasound scan be able to detect a lymphoma or an abnormal mass in my neck?

Yes: An ultrasound of an area can detect an abnormal mass in that area and characterize is as fluid-filled or solid.  An MRI and CT scan with IV contrast can also be used to evaluate neck masses, and may offer additional information or image a larger area.

diagnosed with me 18 months ago. clear blood tests. ultrasound of neck shows several lymph nodes but all under 1cm. is this ok or could it be lymphoma?

&lt; 1 cm SA = good: Lymph nodes with short axis measurements of less than 1 cm are not, technically, considered adenopathy, although widespread early metastatic disease cannot be excluded (would require a pet scan).  The lack of anything else worrisome per history is reassuring.  I don't know what "me" is, but ultrasound surveillance of the neck nodes in 4-6 months to ensure stability would be helpful.

Tissue examination: Definitive diagnosis of lymphoma requires examination of the involved lymph node by a pathologist. Ultrasound may disclose if deeper situated lymph nodes are also involved.

large lymph node on side of neck for over 5 yrs. over 1cm, can move when i touch it, not hurt. got ultrasound turned out "normal". lymphoma???

Possibly: At times a low grade lymphoma can occupy a single node clinically and not progress in size for many years. Even though the end results would be favorable should this prove to be such a lesion, biopsy is still indicated so that one can predict possible long term outcome and know how to handle the situation should other nodes eventually appear.
