Painless swelling: Lymphedema of the legs is usually painless.  If you have painful swelling, it is more likely to be something called lipidema.  The hallmark of lymphedema of the legs is that the feet and toes are also swollen.  If you can't pinch the skin on the top of your 2nd or 3rd toes because of swelling, then it is probably lymphedema.  This is not true if you have edema from other causes.

Leg swelling: The first thing is swelling.  It is often subtle and goes down at night so early edema can be overlooked.  As the problem progresses, the swelling worsens and stops getting better at night.  Leg swelling is usually generalized and tends to spare the leg below the ankle,  whereas lymphedema is more segmental and affects the feet and toes more than the rest of the lower limb. Pain is uncommon.

Yes: Physical therapy is very helpful for lymphedema, especially if the therapist is trained in lymphatic drainage.  Physical therapists may do gentle lymphatic massage, wrap or tape the swollen arm, break-up scar tissue and lymphatic cords, and teach you techniques for home care of lymphedema.  They may also measure you for a compression sleeve and/or glove.

See your doctor: First, you need to be evaluated by a doctor to rule out other causes than the zerona laser for your symptoms.  Please see a good internal medicine, possibly infectious disease specialist.  For chronic lymphedema, lymphatic massage, gentle ultrasound, hivmat treatments, compression and gentle exercise can be of help.  Good luck!

have lymphedema in foot/leg. when i take prednisone for asthma symptoms,  my lymphedema goes away! comes back when asthma starts acting up. related?

Inflammation: Prednisone is a potent anti-inflammatory that acts on the entire body.  You are young, you should see a lymphaedema specialist to make sure you are appropriately diagnosed and being treated optimally to avoid  future complications. You may have another underlying condition causing inflammation.

Not likely: Unfortunately, lymphedema is a chronic lifelong problem that can be controlled but probably never cured.  There are some new micro surgical techniques that are showing some promise but they aren't a cure either.  They are simply an additional treatment tool.

Unfortunately, no...: ...However, many people with lymphedema will benefit greatly by the use of physical therapy.  I recommend you seek out a referral to a physical therapist trained in lymphatic drainage.

YEs: There are several medical specialties that  focus on lympedema. In order of frequency:  vascular medicine specialist, vein specialist also called phlebologist , vascular surgeons, dermatology, cardiology and family practice focus on  lymphedema in their practices. All of these  specialties  diagnose and treat lymphedema, but there is no single specialty that diagnosis or treats lymphedema.
