Prevention is best: The team treating you should know some moith-moistening and hygeine routines to make this a little better.  Many patients use jelly like aquaphor on the skin but, this should not be put into the mouth.  Keep up your intake of water/fluids and use moisturing balm on the lips.  Unfortunately, these problems can far outlast the treatment with people reporting them as far as a year after the radiation.

Dig deeper first: Cracked lips may not be as benign as one would think. It could signal a nutritional deficiency. Make sure that his/her diet is adequately balanced first, thus treating the cause.

Cracks/blisters: Make sure you haven&#x27;t got into the habit of constantly licking your lips. Sometimes things as simple as petroleum jelly applied to the corner of your lips works.If necessary see your own dentist for an evaluation and treatment. He/she may refer you to your primary care physician or a  dermatologist if cause is not readily apparent.

Secondary infection?: Cracking of skin at the angles of the mouth, tho not eczema, is very difficult to treat because it 'recracks' each time the mouth opens. Vicious cycle! keep it elastic & supple with absolutely continuous and constant lip balm, vaseline, etc. Until it heals. If he has eczema & it has 'exploded' recently, there may be a secondary bacterial infection, and a trip to the doctor may be worthwhile.

Depends:  Infants have no need for external application of any salve or ointment. If exposed to excessive cold a small amount of unscented Vaseline or chap stick should be adequate. If this is a chronic issue it may be related to a condition called peri-oral dermatitis that would need an evaluation &amp; prescription meds.

Chelitis: Many conditions and factors can precipitate transient or chronic cheilitis, including overexposure to the sun, nutritional deficiencies, allergies, medications, dehydration, diet and certain systemic diseases. Transient cheilitis typically requires no medical intervention. Treatment for chronic cheilitis depends on the underlying cause.

Lip allergy or...: Persistent chapped lips may be treated like skin eczema, using hydrocortisone cream plus Vaseline or Aquaphor to retain moisture. Sometimes lipsticks or lip sunscreen chemicals are causing an allergic reaction on the lips. Other times, a person is a lip-licker (it's her habit). Once cracked, lips get irritated by foods and juices. Vaseline itself is just oil and thus shouldn't cause allergies.
