ive been treating mrsa skin infection with doxycycline and am afraid its spreading. could a low temperature be a symptom? and how low is abnormal?

Spread: If the red, tender skin area is growing in size or has new red streaks, you must notify your prescribing provider right away.   Certainly MRSA can cause overwhelming infection (sepsis) but the sufferer would unlikely be sitting up posting questions.

Hygiene: To prevent MRSA skin infections as well as any other infection, one should practice good hygiene with washing hands and cleaning surfaces etc that may have been exposed to MRSA or any infection with a good disinfectant. I often recommend the use of alcohol hand gels as this often sterilizes hands as well as cleanse skin surfaces.

Cellulitis: Very strong possibility of this progressing into cellulitis if not properly treated. If the wound/scratch is infected it will be erythematous, tender and usually have drainage. Treat any infection appropriately with antibiotics and local wound care.

Check out CDC: 1st the CDC (center for disease control) has a GREAT website resource for you.  Look up CDC MRSA.  You could be considered infectious.  Soap on your body may reduce MRSA, you may use alcohol to spot kill MRSA on your body.  Bleach will kill MRSA on floors etc.  Hot water and soap should reduce or neutralize most MRSA on laundry. MRSA now occurs in our environment- no way to "remove" it. Be well.

Complex medical: Having multiple medical issues can be very overwhelming! Please continue to go to your medical and mental health appointments. Try making small changes to your regimen each day such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or cutting out sugary drinks from your diet. You may also try joining support groups for diabetes for example. Don't give up! With time and effort things will improve!

NO !!: If you truly have a MRSA infection, antibiotics may the best pathway for healing.  Steroids can make things worse.  You should  see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and make the correct treatment.

my 9 y/o has had a pimple on his nose for 3 days.  how can i tell if it is a pimple or skin infection like mrsa?

Pimple: A staph infection (MRSA) will cause increased redness spreading from the initial lesion, swelling, and a possible abscess under the skin (a pus pocket). If it is small and not spreading, the chance of a MRSA infection is much less.

Thirty MInute Rule: I teach my patients, especially those on medications that may cause upset stomachs, if they throw up within thirty minutes after taking a medication they should retake it. If it is longer than thirty minutes they wait to take the next dose when it is due.

Skin infection: You should be okay as long as you are on antibiotics and you wash your hands with soap

16month old started bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) 2 nights ago for a skin infection that might be mrsa.she had a fever last night and this morning 100.8 (armpit) ...normal?

Re-evaluate...: Follow up with your daughter's physician today and let them know that she has developed a fever after being on the antibiotics for two day.  They will want to see the area of infection and make sure that it isn't the cause and that the antibiotics don't need to be changed.  The fever could be from an unrelated viral illness, but you won't know until she is examined.
