: The standard way is to get a prescription from either your family doctor or a dentist.  At age 46 there might be some deeper inflammation in the tooth root which a visit to your dentist can discover.  Penicillin is of course a prescriptive item unless you live close to the border from Mexico and want to try a pharmacy over the border.

Yes in some cases: If you have an abscessed tooth the penicillin will help the pain. It will not cure the problem though. If it is an abcessed tooth you will need root canal or extraction.

Antibiotic: Penicillin is an antibiotic, not an analgesic. If your tooth is not infected, all the penicillin in the world will not make you feel better. The tooth needs to be definitively treated by your dentist... Let them take a look.

Possibly: You don't know if you have an infection, do you? Taking antibiotics when you don't have an infection is totally useless, and taking antibiotics if you do have a dental infection will not fix the tooth. You still need to see a dentist for care, so the sooner you call the sooner you will feel better..

Call your dentist: Call the dentist that prescribed the medications about this problem. Could be that the antibiotic is not working or you are having a reaction to it. Or something else is going on.  Get checked out.

is it normal to not be able to hold down any food after taking penicillin vk 500mg? i keep vomiting and can't eat. i was prescribed it for a severe toothache.

Typically : Typically it is recommended that you take antibiotics after eating.  Taking the medication on an empty stomach is an invitation to an upset stomach especially if it mixes with the acid in your stomach.  Try eating something a half hour prior to taking the medication.  If this continues discuss it with your dentist to see if they can change to another antibiotic.

Are you taking pain medications at the same time?  If so that is an additional reason that you are experiencing GI upset.

One additional note, this is probably not an allergy as is typically thought by patients.

See Dentist : Right away! Antibiotics cannot cure a dental infection. If you don't go to the dentist it will only get worse.

Yes.: If the pain is getting unbearable and swelling is increasing then you need to be attended to ASAP. Would be better if the tooth were attended to by a dentist so that the source of the infection can be treated and the problem mitigated. Please take action.

Self Medication: Penicillin will not solve your dental issues. Antibiotics are great for infections, but do not fix rotten teeth. You will need to see a dentist immediately. An alternative is the ER for immediate treatment. You are absolutely correct to be concerned... the infection can rapidly spread to your eye and to other parts of your body. All the best...
