Oro-antral opening: This occurs when the roots of the maxillary teeth communicate with the maxillary sinus. When the tooth is removed, there is an opening between the sinus and your oral cavity. This usually heals on its own without incident. To help promote healing and to avoid repair surgery, do not blow your nose until the area is completely healed. Allow your dentist to monitor the site.

Very Minor Risk: Near the sinus cavity in not in the sinus cavity. All tooth extractions are minor surgery (some are more than that) and it must be expected that post operative complications can occur. If your general dentist is concerned about the procedure, then you should be treated by an oral surgeon.

Depends: You might not have any symptoms. That being said a sinus infection , pain in the tooth root tip area and sinus pain  are some of the symptoms you could have. You might want to go back to the dentist and have a radiograph taken of the area usually its unlikely a canine tooth will result in a sinus perfortion.

Thank : Thank you for asking a great question and for explaining things fully.

The dentists at the va don't feel confident enough of their skills to extract this tooth, and they referred you to an oral surgeon for the procedure. So far this is standard protocol.

Waiting a month for this is way too long, any your pain will only worsen. You need to

a) have them refer you to a surgeon who can see you in the next day or two as an emergency

or

b) they need to relieve your pain and prevent a massive infection.

If the tooth is broken into the nerve, or cavity is that deep, they could always start root canal therapy on the tooth. This would remove the nerve and let the pain die down until the surgeon can see you. It is most likely the only way you will see some relief if the pain is that bad.

What is the worse that can happen? I don't really want to frighten you, but an infection that bursts into the maxilla right under your eye and inches from vital organs can put you at extreme risk.

Please go back and have them do something to prevent a massive infection and to make you comfortable.

Pain-tooth/sinus: Inital symptoms for cavities, sensitive teeth and sinus pain can be similar. Sensitivity to drinking cold or hot beverages, or eating certain solids can isolate the problem to the mouth. Discoloration of a tooth with pain/numbness and sensitivity not responding to soft brushing and toothpase for sensitive teeth leans toward a cavity. Cold/congestion over 1 week with fever may suggest sinus issues.

Not likely: Generally, wisdom teeth growing around or into the sinuses cause few problems, and they definitely won't kill you ... Unless they become infected. But any infection left untreated can be dangerous. If it concerns you, be proactive and have your wisdom tooth/teeth removed.
