Necessary vs safe: This is not an easy  (safe) drug to take for any time and it may require more and more to be effective - BUT it may be necessary. Discuss this in depth w/ your Dr and keep them closely informed of how you are doing. Always seek to evaluate as many non-drug treatments as possible. Best!

ContinuousNeuropathy: The continuous neuropathic pain disorder is among the most difficult chronic pain syndromes to manage. Depending upon the site of damage, neuropathic pain syndromes are classified as central, peripheral or mixed. If this is the case combination of systemic and topical approaches
is recommended. Cognitive behavioral therapy is important in your case.
Neurontin 800 mg/day is a very low dose.

how do i get rid of  neuropathy pain from shingles?  i've had the pain for almost 2 years.  i'm taking 800 mg of gabapentin  and it just  barely takes

Consider topicals: 60-min capsaicin patch 8% applied by your dr topical Lidocaine (lidoderm 5%) can be tried but results less predictable. Your dr may be able to recommend safe & effective topicals through a compounding pharmacy. Tricyclic antidepressants (desipramine&gt;amitriptyline) work for most, but be patient, may take 3-4 weeks to kick in. Gabapentin dose is too low. Lyrica (pregabalin) and Depakote may help.

can taking gabapentin long time cause seizures tendency in person who never had one?? i have been prescribed gabapentin for idiopathic rls but i figured that it's an anti seizures drug so is it harmful to me in that sense if i take it for years??

: Typically, if the medicine is taken as prescribed, it would not induce seizures in someone who is not prone to seizures. But, if you take the gabapentin for years and wish to stop taking it, the medication should be weaned off under a doctor’s care, not stopped abruptly. Stopping the med abruptly can induce seizures in some patients, usually those who are seizure-prone but better to be safe!

hello doctor, i take gabapentin once daily for rls , my question can i take it on alternative day instead of daily?? my symptoms are of mild intensity. since i will require medicine for years, i don't want to develop tolerance and side effects ?

: Yes, you might very well have success with an every other day schedule, but not always.  You just have to try it and see if it is productive and successful

i have had scoliosis surgery back in 1991, for the past few years i suffer from severe pain in the  buttocks. i go for pain mana i take neurontin (gabapentin) 300mg 3x a day and have been getting pain management and neither works

Buttock : Buttock pain is often caused by sacroiliitis.  This is common after lumbar fusion.  Sacroilitis can be treated by steroid joint injections, burning the nerves over the sacroiliac joint and sacroiliac joint fusion.  I would recommend seeing spine surgeon for further treatment in injections and nerve burning has not helped.  Good luck!

was addicted to opiates for years bc chronic nerve pain (crp) now on suboxone. pain intolerable. had surgery, lyrica, (pregabalin) gabapentin, (can't take nsaid - bleed.) non -narcotic suggestion? any help at all?

Pain or addiction: For addiction, the psychological and social issues are most important, group (mainly group) and individual counseling with Suboxone works in the majority.

While I cannot say in your particular case, nerve pain, is treated with practically Any pill that damps down nerves (anti-epileptics--lyrica/gabapentin/others; Lidocaine or Lidocaine like drugs--amitryptiline)

i have chronic pericarditis 1 liter blood drained(uctd). a pericardial window 7 years ago with no heart damage. i take plaquenil, vit d and iron for uctd and gabapentin, cymbalta for autonomic neuropathy. am i at increased risk for bad covid outcomes?

Yes: Self isolate, wear a mask and use good hand washing.  Watch for signs of respiratory distress. Arrange test locally if symptoms develop. Have a flu vaccine.

is it safe for me to take two capsules of gabapentin 300mg together or should i  only take one in morning+1 at night, i forgot 2 take it in morning?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Generally Gabapentin is a short-acting medication, so the morning dose won't help very much with evening symptoms.  If you forgot to take it in the morning, you can take it whenever you realize you forgot to take it.  Then take the next one at your next scheduled time.  The only side effect at these doses is slight sedation.
