After 5 years?: Tonsils can be removed easily and at any age. But most doctors try to avoid this procedure because kids often grow out of it after 5 years of age. If the Tonsils continue to cause problems such as frequent infections in the throat or in the ears, them it may be necessary to remove them,. Consult an ENT specialist and get a second opinion before you rush into their removal.

Tonsillectomy: no, it's not a sandwich, it's surgery and your surgeon will decide and it most likely be general endotracheal anesthesia or LMA.

Quickly: Actually you will wake up and have your breathing tube removed within 5-10 minutes of the surgeon being done. That said, your memory will be fuzzy for about another 1/2 hr, so you may not remember things until you have been in the recovery room for a while. You will be pretty awake when you go home though.

As an anesthesiologist I have provided care with this under local - I doubt that you will find anyone in the USA willing to do this due to the high litigation environment and the over regulation by the government and then local regulation and then hospital policies.

No: Cant imagine it would be possible or safe.  Endotrachial intubation protects the lungs from blood and other debris.  One would have difficulty being comfortable or breathing with a doctor taking out your tonsils without general anesthesia.

Anesthesia choice: Yes, you can remove tonsils under local anaesthesia only. But only if you have the ability to psyche yourself out to the point that your body doesn't react to the other surgical impulses. Example: the mouth guard use to keep your mouth open for the surgery. The blood and fluids going to your stomach. Also, your surgeon won't be able to anesthetise all areas before causing you pain. Got it ?!

Notify anesthesiolog: Since THC is a drug that affect the nervous system, it probable have some effect on general anesthesia. Make sure that you inform the anesthesiologist so your procedure will be better monitor.

Get life in order: Take a deep breath, and take the plunge. We incur a little risk everyday. We walk on streets, drive in cars...Get the best doctors you can (ask for patient referrals) and go for it!

Ga vs sedation: In your case after breathing oxygen IV medication will be given and after you are asleep endotracheal tube will be placed and anesthesia ventilator will support your breathing. In cases of IV sedation you breath on your own and your airway is not controlled. Sometimes ga can be done without airway devices, but in your cases it is nessasary to protect your airway. Talk to your anesthesiologist.
