Possible nerve: Irritation. Consider stretching and strengthening exercises if it does not aggravate the pain or cause increase in radiating pain.  Take a look at:
http://www.Spine-health.Com/conditions for some stretching recommendations.  Nsaids, if appropriate for your health, can be of benefit. It sounds like to do have some nerve irritation from a possible pinched nerve, but will need a physical exam.

Neuropathy: Unless you have had this condition for a long time, the condition is probably not genetic. A neuropathy can occur without tingling, especially early in its course. Nerve conduction studies can confirm or exclude that possibility. Arterial disease can also cause similar symptoms but there would likely be pallor & coldness of the limb. Blood vessel ultrasound can document this is present.

Problem is higher up: If it keeps happening, you may be compressing a disc or part of nerve coming out if it to give you these symptoms. Proper diagnosis with imaging would be helpful to get remedial help like  physical Thierry etc. Feel better

Nerves: It appears that the superficial nerves in the ankle area are irritable for some reason. Make sure that no constricting articles like straps, too tight shoes or hose AREN't the problem.If symptoms persist or worsen your physician should evaluate you for neuropathy,vitamin B12 ,calcium,magnesium,deficiencies,etc.

Not from b12 defic.: B12 is often prescribed without a clearcut need for the vitamin supplement.  It's 100% safe.  But even if you had a genuine B12 deficiency, the supplementary dose is high enough that you should not experience any symptoms "when a shot is due."  Look for another cause of your symptoms.

Diabetes?: You are describing an early peripheral neuritis; a deterioration of the nerve insulation.  It most often is an early sign of diabetes so check your urine and blood.  If it gets annoyingly worse we have a few meds that can help. Too much alcohol and lead poisoning are other possibilities.

Pinched Nerve: Sounds like you have a pinched nerve in your back.  I would suggest seeing a pain/spine specialist to evaluate you further to evaluate what level and what can be done to treat you.  There are interventional treatments besides medications and surgeries that might reduce or  eliminate the pain altogether.
