for 1-2 weeks i haven't had a full bm. sometimes i pass small/thin/soft stools. i'm nauseous, need to go but can't. what to do? laxatives don't help.

See doctor: If laxative has not helped, it is time to consult your doctor to find out why. The nausea and change in stool size suggest that there may be something more serious than just constipation.

Stool Habits : Does this represent a change in your stool caliber? It sounds like it does. The most common causes of a change in the caliber of the stool is a partial obstruction in the colon or smooth muscle spasm, the latter often accompanying bowel inflammatory or hypermotility disorders. Diverticulitis can be one such cause, but, to be sure, it would be best to consult your gastroenterologist.

occasional thin stool from toddler. this is new. seems as if it started around the time we stopped giving her as much water as before daily. im of course worried about the stool being thin. if it was due to growths wouldnt it be constantly thing?

: Shape and size of stool is typically diet-related. Is there a reason for giving less water? Maybe if you return to the same water intake, the stools might return to prior size/shape. If any other symptoms develop or if you remain concerned, see a doctor. Best of luck to you!

Usually: Something in the lower colon or rectum would be the cause, either stricture, tumor or hemorrhoids. Any change in caliber of stools needs to be evaluated by a colorectal surgeon, sooner rather than later. Some type of scoping depending on your history would be the next step.

Abnormal anal canal : If pencil thin stool is going on for more than few days, then you need to see a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon. Physical narrowing of the anal canal or rectum needs to be ruled out.  This could mean a serious problem. So don't delay.

"Pencil" stools: refers to the effect of a "circling" cancer of the colon/rectal area...but more frequently is due to Spasm of the lower bowel seen in IBS. If they CONTINUE it needs attention and a "look/see"

Stimulants: After a stimulant to move your bowels the stool is released under pressure and this can help.  However if the sphincter is not relaxed then stool is forced out under pressure and it becomes pencil like.   It should be ok however as long as you are not having other problemsl.

Short list: Assuming your anastomosis is fine and not stenotic the most common cause is your muscles around your anal canal (schinter muscles and puburectalis)  are not relaxing appropriately during  defecation (animus). The best test for this is a voiding proctogram but would wait 6 to 8 weeks from your surgery (lar) to have this done.

Watch it: The narrowing of stool caliber in colon cancer comes on gradually and is consistent. Everybody's bowel movements change considerably from day to do and being overattentive to them is not helpful. If something is obviously wrong and it lasts two weeks or is painful, she should be seen.
