"Pencil" stools: refers to the effect of a "circling" cancer of the colon/rectal area...but more frequently is due to Spasm of the lower bowel seen in IBS. If they CONTINUE it needs attention and a "look/see" Hope this helps! Dr Z

Pencil-thin stool.: While there's no exact measurement involved, a pencil-thin stool is one that subjectively appears to have the circumference of a pencil. It's a thin stool that implies that it had to be squeezed through a narrowing within the colon. This narrowing can be inflammatory, benign, malignant or even external to the colon. Should be investigated with CT and colonoscopy.
