my husband has essential thrombocythemia with calr mutation. his hematologist just changed his medication from hydroxurea to baby aspirin since december. his platelet count increased from 380 to 1118 within 6 months. would this be a safe treatment?

: I'd be concerned about undertreatment in view of that high platelet count. Perhaps the hematologist is concerned about long term hydroxyurea causing leukemia. Hydroxyurea plus low dose aspirin is the extent of my experience but there are other treatment options. A consultation at a university hospital department of hematology would be worthwhile.

Aspirin therapy: Any foods or supplements that interfere with clotting process may increase risk of bleeding: ginko, garlic, ginger, ginseng, (real) licorice, red chili peppers, oil of wintergreen, vitamin e (high dose), fish oil, chondroitin, glucosamine. There are several: clopidogrel, dipyridamole, tirofiban, ticagetor, cilostazol, prasugrel, eptifibatide, ticlopidine all are classified as anti-platlet drugs and are an alternative to aspirin

No: There is no evidence that Aspirin lowers cholesterol.  There is some evidence that it reduces platelet activity and clot formation, but that alone is not enough to lower chokesterol.

Yes, just stop: Yes, can just stop, no need to taper, no withdrawal associated with aspirin therapy.

Anytime: Mostly we recommend "enteric coated" so it does not irritate the lining of your stomach. Can be taken by itself or with your other meds/vitamins.

Low fat: Usual restrictions would be Low fat and low cholesterol diet. If you happen to have diabetes then Restrictions of sugar and carbohydrates would apply. If you have hypertension then some degree of salt restriction will apply. Also your weight needs to be ideal or less than expected for your height.
