VP and VA shunts: If someone is found to have hydrocephalus, or increased CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) pressure in the ventricles of the brain.  Symptoms can develop such as headache, problems with concentration, difficulty walking and others.  Shunts for drainage can be helpful for treatment.. a shunt into the peritoneum of abdomen (VP shunt) is more common.  In some cases shunt into atrium of heart (VA) is chosen.

Rare cases of inborn errors of metabolism result in a defect in metabolism of certain Amino Acids including glycine.  A very rare disorder is non-ketotic hyperglycinemia where the glycine in the CSF is many times normal.  The range of normal varies with ingestion of protein and depending on the form of laboratory assay.
