Depends: An acute sinus infection can last 2-4 weeks because antibiotics have a difficult time penetrating into the sinuses and clearing up the infection. If there are structural problems with draining the sinus, it can be even longer or become a chronic infection.

Sinus - Pregnancy: Usually obs allow some antibiotics and nasal sprays. Some allow decongestants. Check with them and see an ENT specialist if you don't get better.

Sinus infection: Simple cases could clear in a week but bad cases can take two months of antibiotics to clear. If not better in a week or so a CT of the sinuses can be helpful both to confirm the diagnosis and to help determine the severity and potential need for surgical intervention.

Nasal saline spray: Many sinus infections are viral. Over-the-counter medications can make you more comfortable, like anti-inflammatory meds (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc) and decongestants (puedoephedrine).  Steam and nasal irrigation can help.  If your symptoms worsen or persist for more than 7-10 days, you may need antibiotics for a bacterial infection.

Three weeks: Three weeks. Takes three months for sinus to get back to "Normal" provided not chronic or recurrent in nature. Also depends on allergies, irritants, mucosal disease, etc

Any cold meds: Without pseudo Ephedrine or phenyl ephrine which can raise intraocular pressure. Take also some Mucinex (guaifenesin) vitamin c. If it persists you may need some antibiotics. Get examined . Best wishes!

Accepted Answer

Yes: Decongestants can be helpful, but rinsing the nose with salt water can be even more helpful. There are low-volume sprays available in the drug store such as ocean spray or simply saline. High- volume rinsing with a neilmed bottle or neti pot are often even better. You need to see your physician if  your symptoms lasts more than two weeks or you develop fever or facial headaches.

In general no: Doxycycline is not generally a good antibiotic for rhino-sinusitis.  If there is objective evidence of a bacterial infection (documented by culture) i would always recommend a culture and sensitivity of the lateral wall of the nose, particularly, is pus is present.  Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) in patients not allergic to penicillin or Levaquin would be my recommendations.  But a culture is required to make sure.

Accepted Answer

Variable: Most patients gain some relief within 48 hrs if treatment is effective.Actual return to normal may take a week or two. Flonase is not specifically for a sinus infection.It can help if nasal allergies are part of the problem.
