Pain of coccyx, the &quot;tailbone&quot;, if it is disordered, is aroused by direct pressure such as sitting, and not by lifting. Pain in the region of the sacrum and aroused by lifting is more characteristic of disorder of  the pelvis joint called the &quot;sacroiliac joint&quot;.  See comments:

Many things: Commonly trauma (injury to the area) causes pain in the coccyx (tailbone). Sometimes it fractures (breaks). Using a doughnut shaped pillow for sitting can take the pressure off so it heals. Sitting in warm water sometimes helps. If the pain does not improve with time, see your primary provider. In rare cases, rectal problems and tumors can cause pain in the area.

Need history/exam: Hard to tell.  You need to have a thorough history and exam.  Duration, severity, cause, etc need to be done.

Accepted Answer

No: You have less muscle padding with age.  Tailbone pain after long trips is extremely common as we do not move arou!nd much or take pressure off our tailbone during these trips.  You can minimize the discomfort by sitting on a pressure relieving pad; avoid inflatable doughnuts as they frequently cause more pressure on hemorrhoids and can cause a clot in a hemorrhoid.  Don't worry, and good luck.

Coccyx bruise or fx: Most likely you bruised or fractured your coccyx, or tail bone.  It is rarely a surgical problem, but it can take weeks or months to resolve.  Generally, we recommend warm water sitz baths and over-the-counter analgesics like acetaminophen, Ibuprofen or naproxen.  If it hurts to sit, buy a coccyx cushion.  If the pain is severe, see an orthopaedist.

Coccydynia: Usually this is due to pain in the coccyx, or tailbone.  Sometimes it comes from trauma, but other times there is no explanation.  If it only hurts when sitting on hard surfaces, avoid doing so!  if you have no choice, there are coccyx cushions that you can buy to relieve the pain, or you can take over-the-counter anti-inflammatories.  If the pain is severe see an orthopaedist.

Any recent trauma?: Tailbone pain is called coccydynia with many causes being unknown. Other causes include trauma (fracture), childbirth, prolonged sitting. Rarely, infection or bone tumor. Treatment includes anti-inflammatories and cushions and could take months. To be complete, see a physician and an xray maybe indicated.

Pad: Use a memory foam pressure relieving pad on long trips in the car or on a plane.  The inconvenience of carrying the pad is well worth the relief that you will experience.  Good luck!

Tail bone pain: The first thing to do is to try to figure out why you have the pain. Assuming any bad things like infection have been ruled out then conservative therapy with drugs like Ibuprofen and some "tincture of time" may work. More aggressive treatment includes ganglion impars blocks which are easy to do and are done by interventional pain management physicians. They can be very effective.
