Many things: Commonly trauma (injury to the area) causes pain in the coccyx (tailbone). Sometimes it fractures (breaks). Using a doughnut shaped pillow for sitting can take the pressure off so it heals. Sitting in warm water sometimes helps. If the pain does not improve with time, see your primary provider. In rare cases, rectal problems and tumors can cause pain in the area.
