the max dose for zantac (ranitidine) is 2 150mg pills/day, but my heart burn is terrible and i have already taken 2.  can i take a tagamet on top of those two?

I wouldn't.: If your pain is so severe and is not being quelled by two Zantac (H2 blocker), then I would question whether it is acid reflux.  I'd go see a physician.  However, you can also consider trial of a proton pump inhibitor like nexium (esomeprazole) instead to see if it helps.  I still recommend you seeing your doc.

Both h2 blockers: They are both in a class of acid medicines called h2 blockers. They should be comparable in their effectiveness. I would stick to the one that works best for you.

Yes : There are now 4 types of histamine receptors.  Zantac (ranitidine) acts on the h2 receptor resulting in blocking stomach acid thereby treating heartburn. Allergies are treated with h1 blocking type medications including claritin, (loratadine) zyrtec and allegra.  Some medications have both actions to block both h1 and h2 receptor.  For anaphylaxis, zantac can be added for it's effect on blood vessels.

Not exactly: Zantac (ranitidine) is an h2 (histamine) blocker that is typically used for ge (acid) reflux.  However, it is commonly used to treat chronic hives in combination with traditional antihistamines.  It is also used for additional treatment of severe (anaphylaxis) allergic reactions although first line treatment is Epinephrine and h1 antihistamine.  It will not help allergic rhinitis.

About the same: They both are about the same although Pepcid (famotidine) ac also has an antacid in it.

No: It used to be thought that the addition of medications such as ranitidine or Famotidine may be helpful since they do block one of the histamine receptors.  However, current guidelines do not support the use of the medications in the treatment of hives.

Anxiety, GERD, Ulcer: Ativan is for Anxiety.

Zantac is to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and hyperacidity. 
Gaviscon is for acid indigestion and heartburn.
