Why take it?: If you are on synthroid (thyroxine), (thyroxine) you likely are being treated for hypothyroidism.  The most common cause in your age group is hashimoto's thyroiditis.  Taking iodine makes this condition worse, not better.  By the way, synthroid (thyroxine) already contains iodine molecules.

my wife takes synthroid (thyroxine). takes clonazepin for panic. she has a sore throat where her thyroid is on one side, and digestive upset. doc monday. can she take nsaids for her throat pain? she's panicking.

NSAIDS: This should be ok if she does not overdose herself.  Acetaminophen (tylenol) or Ibuprofen (aleve) should be satisfactory. Good luck.

At least a month: If your TSH was 0.01 you were definitely taking too much thyroid hormone so I assume your doctor reduced your dose.  I usually wait 1-2 months before repeating the free T4 and TSH on the new dose by which time the tests should have stabilized

Yes: Generic synthroid is called levothyroxine. Taking generic version is reasonable and will likely achivevsimilar results , however i would recommend that you inform your endocrinologist about such switch as you may need to have your thyroid levels checked soon (a few weeks) after making the switch to ensure your dosing is appropriate. I would also recommend that you adhere to one kind of preparation.

Weeks: You may start to feel a difference in 1-2 weeks, but you need to give a new dosage 6 weeks before rechecking thyroid blood levels.

No: You should just restart the medication as prescribed. Do not take extra.

Thyroid: No need to worry. Your doctor needs to keep an eye on you as you proceed through pregnancy, changing the dose as needed. You and baby will be fine. Your obstetrician will look after you as well.

Nothing.: Synthroid / levothyroxine is the only medication that acts like it does.  There is no over the counter substitute. Depending upon the symptoms you want to treat, maybe exercise, better or more sleep or stimulants such as coffee / tea would be a good choice. If levels are repeatedly normal you may want to consider that maybe your doctors are right and you do not have a thyroid issue.

Thyroid: Typically the recommendation is to wait at least 30 min after your thyroid medication before consuming foods or vitamins. There is some new emerging evidence also that you can take all your weekly thyroid pills in a single dose once weekly. You might want to ask your doctor about this as the studies have shown no difference in long term control and may make it easier for u to take vitamins.

what's the best medicine to treat hypothyroidism during pregnancy? i'm on synthroid (thyroxine) should i take cytomel too?

Accepted Answer

No need.: Cytomel is useful when either a rapid rise, or a rapid fall, in thyroid hormone levels is needed. If there is need to adjust dosage in pregnancy, slower acting synthroid (thyroxine) works just fine.
