Local reaction tx: Insect bites should be washed with soap and water. An ice or cold pack may help reduce local swelling. Topical creams, gels and lotions such as those containing calamine or pramoxine decrease itching. Avoid topical anesthetic and antihistamine preparations.

Test is not reliable: See your doc again and revisit the symptoms . The test may be negative at a high negative rate but still have the process. Would go over the symptoms with the doc and have the doc look at the original site and describe any rash that you might have had. Sometimes if symptoms persist then the person is treated anyhow.

hi, my son 16 months old has a fever and runny  nose. no big deal, many kids seem to be sick but he also had a tick bite about 2 weeks ago. should we be going to the doctor? no swelling or mark's are visible near where bite was and it feels unrelated

Observation OK: Early Lyme disease from a tick bite can cause fever and malaise, but is usually associated with a rash around the tick bite.  If the fever started with the onset of the runny nose, that is the more likely cause.   Fever from viral upper respiratory infections usually only last a few days, but if fever is high or persistent and your child appears ill, an evaluation is urgent.

Insect related : The illness may be related to an insect borne infection or an unrelated infection,but if the fever and symptoms worsen or persists, please see your physician. Fluids,rest and Ibuprofen for your fever are suggested.

Possibly: It is possible it is a reaction to one of the medications, the other possibilities are it is related to the infection you are being treated for, or that you have another condition which had not yet been diagnosed.  It would be wise to be seen and fully evaluated for an accurate diagnosis.

Itchies Away: Apply over the counter Hydrocortisone 1% cream or calamine lotion.
You can take other the counter antihistamines like Diphenhydramine [benadryl] or chorpheniramine maleate [chlortrimeton]. If these make you too sleepy, you can take non-drowsy Loratadine [claritin, alavert] instead.

It's important to talk with someone about this, because ticks are known to carry a number of infections, such as lyme disease, babesia, and other bacterias. Generally they are slow growing infections and the symptoms can sneak up on you, or come and go over time. It would be a good idea to discuss this with your parents or a doctor. They might decide to give you a few weeks of antibiotic treatment to prevent a chronic infection.

Check with your dr: If you have the tick bring to your physician. Depending on where you live, treatment recommendations may or may not include antibiotics prophylactically. If you do not live in an area where lyme's disease is a common the recommendation may be to observe by your physician.

Avoid contact: Try to avoid places where the likelyhood of encountering ticks is high ( wooden areas) if this is not feasible, wear long sleeves, avoid shorts when going to the woods or use  a tick repellent.
