: I'm not sure if these meds used to treat chronic constipation are as effective in IBS-C as some of the other prescription meds. I recommend consulting a gastroenterologist for best care and treatment advice.

Diet: Ibs is caused by messages from the brain to the bowel. So the opposite of that is constipation and it means that your autonomic (automatic) nervous system is unstable. The major cause in the U.S. Is diet, especially sugar in all its forms, including sweeteners. Look up my blog "oxygen, the spark of life" that you can google. You don't put the wrong fuel into your car so the body has the same needs.

Diet, activity: Try a high fiber diet, lots of fluids and regular exercise.  This is the most natural way to fight constipation.

Occ. Lax. safe: If you have iBS, increase fiber, do not skip meals, avoid triggere foods, regular exercise.Occasional  laxatives are not harmful.If fiber doesn't help symptoms, your doctor may prescribe magnesium hydroxide oral (Phillips' Milk of Magnesia) or polyethylene glycol (Miralax).

Need workup: IBS is usually a diagnosis of exclusion. Meaning all other causes of it infectious, cancerous, food or water induced are eliminated thru physician exams, labs etc.
That said, I recommend Oatmeal. Especially Irish Oatmeal. It is high in fiber and types of fibers. Thus can stabilize the bowel. Add some Yogurt with good bacteria. This will help stabilize the stresses your bowel is showing.

Yes, possibly: Yes it can. However in young females there could be many other reasons for pain in the abdomen. You can try some Miralax (polyethylene glycol) OTC 1-2 scoops daily as needed for constipation and if pain keeps recurring,  you will need to see a doc.

i have ibs with both diariaha and constipation .  i have started dropping out of my favorite things because it is uncontrollable  diariaha.  what can i do to get relief? i've cut out a lot of foods.

You need workup: Ibs is a loose term, no pun intended.
You need a GI workup and food allergy testing.

You can't rule ibs: Before we diagnose ibs we have to rule out other problems, like gall bladder disease, chronic constipation, poor diet habits.
