if margin is clear could cancer cells still be left behind after surgery?

Accepted Answer

Yes: The goal of every cancer surgery is to remove the cancer and a rim of normal tissue to "clear margins".  Despite this, there may be microscopic cancer left behind, either in the surgical area or elsewhere in the body. This is why we often recommend radiation- and chemotherapy --to treat this local or systemic disease, respectively.  Regrettably, it's what we don't see that matters most.

could doctor know if any malignant cells has been left behind after surgery? what if the prioximal and margin are clear?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: Your surgeon evaluates the margins of your specimen under the microscope with a pathologist at the time of the operation. This is done as a "frozen section" of the specimen. Later, the pathologist evaluates the specimen with permanent stains and markers. This is the final determination of the specimen and its characteristics. Your surgeon should be able to tell you the specifics of your specimen.

scab fell off my wound from surgery after a bath. it was yellow/green. can see stitches now through the "hole" left behind. is this normal?

Call your surgeon: The sutures that your are seeing may be absorbable sutures that "dissolves" over several weeks.  If you have redness, increased pain, fever, or pus like drainage see your doctor right away as you may be getting a wound infection.  As far as the "hole" I would keep this area clean and dry and covered with a sterile gauze.   Do not let moisture get into the wound.  Ask your surgeon!

hi i had surgery 2 weeks in a row and had an iv in my left hand. the vein behind the iv sight is raised and hurts. plz help me?

Some possibilites: cannot say in your particular case without seeing it AND any cutting will produce scarring. More severe issues include scarring so bad the vein collapses (not as bad as it sounds) and local infection (can be pretty bad).

after chalazion surgery, will the eye go back to the way it was, or will there be a permanent scar left behind?

Usually no scar: Usually no scar after chalazion surgery but the final result can sometimes take a few months to heal.  Sometimes the healing process can take even longer depending on the severity of the lesion and if it was drained from the anterior( skin side) or posterior ( conjunctival side).

Follow advise of MD: You have symptoms , your doctor advised you the surgery. It is a benign disease and the it and  is low risk non complex procedure. UK has excellent highly trained surgeons , if you are afraid take a second opinion  .

Scar revision: It depends on the scar.   You can use creams like mederma, laser resurfacing or scar revision surgery or a combination.   Consult a facial surgeon to determine your options.

i had cervical spine surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago. i have pain, swelling, redness and itching behind my left ear. could theybe related?

Itchy ear: Nothing that should really be affected behind the hear. Maybe a tape allergy/intolerance? If it is a scab just above the ear on both sides, maybe your doctor used some "tongs" to maintain your head position during surgery? Ask your surgeon, but nothing that is likely significant.

endoscopic surgery 5 days ago. i have dull sinus headache and significant pain behind my left eye. should i call doctor?

Yes: What part of your anatomy was scoped?
But discuss with physician.
Could be medicine response or reaction to procedure.
