That : That is a good idea and as long as you don't get the solution in the wound should not hurt anything.  If you develop increased pain, redness, or new complaints then please be re-evaluated by your doctor.

70 year old with artificial artery bypass in leg & has had over 5 surgeries to remove blood clots. what can we do to save leg? q

I : I am so sorry that this patient has had to go through all of this.  I am assuming that the patient is under the care of an excellent vascular surgeon.  The patient should be on optimal medical management including blood thinners if the vascular surgeon thinks is appropriate.  The patient should have optimal wound care by a wound care specialist if any wounds are present.  Obviously the patient should absolutely not be smoking and should have optimal nutritional management.

i developed acute l arm ischemia hours after brachial artery catheter angiogram. had surgery to remove clot. on 2 blood thinners and aspirin. days later, having l calf pain/tightness feeling. no redness no swelling. could i get another blood clot?

Unlikely: Without a clotting disorder, and on thinners it would be unlikely to develop a new clot. You should discuss this with your treating doctor for further treatment options. Consider controlled graduated compression socks, over the knee

Accepted Answer

Not typically: If this is a "dvt" or deep venous thrombosis, management usually starts with blood thinning drugs.  Surgery or catheter based therapies are usually reserved only for very rare severe cases.  

Arterial blood clots are less frequent.  If this is an arterial blood clot (arterial thromboembolism), surgery may be warranted urgently to restore blood flow to the leg.

Possible: A period of immobility and  surgery can contribute to risk of  a blood clot. Especially if surgery was more than an hour. Also if no sequential compression devices on legs during surgery. If curious, call your doc.

i have a pulmonary embolism after foot surgery about five weeks ago - i am on blood thinner tablets but i have a hot spot on my leg (same one i had surgery) its about midway between my ankle and my knee could this be another blood clot - my hips are?

Unlikely a : "deep" blood clot since blood thinners , especially the newer ones, are quite effective in preventing seep vein thrombosis (clots) which then could travel to the lungs. Rather I  suspect acute superficial phlebitis. Inform your treating consultant ASAP  since bacterial issues may be an issue here. In the meantime..APPLY HOT packs and elevate the leg.

Calf pain: Most likely you are walking on your tip toes and should walk slower with a cane paying careful attention to land on your heel and gently lift off on your toes.

when you have surgery, do they have medicine readily  available if you were to have a blood clot? either during or after? if not, why? i know when i had surgery,  they used these compressions pads on my legs, is that the best technique prevention?

: Yes, there are several blood thinners available to use for clot prevention that are commonly used post-operatively. Additionally there are meds that can be administered inside the vessel directly at the site of an identified blood clot to dissolve it. Compression pads are used to keep blood from sitting stagnate which could result in clots.

Best to remove doubt: Fortunately, blood clots after foot surgery, are not all that common. Recognizing one, unfortunately, is not always easy. The symptoms can range from a weird pain in the back of your leg to a full blown classic description. This would include swelling, color and temperature changes as well as pain. Since the danger of clots is so serious, it is best to have the leg evaluated and possibly tested.

my son has factor v leiden, he has a blood clot in his leg and the doctors are talking about doing surgery. what kind of surgery would they do?

Blood clots -surgery: There are several possibilities here for what they may be talking about, depending on the situation. In rare instances, a blood clot may need to actually be removed. Again, this is quite uncommon but not unheard of. They may also be talking about putting a filter in one of the big blood vessels going back to his heart, so that if a bit of the clot breaks of it can't get to his heart of brain. ASK!
