Sure - by not much: Sure - you can get a tiny teeny bit shorter - dependent on what surgery and who did your surgery.  Discectomy removes a small portion of your inter-vertebral disc. One disc only makes up a tiny fraction of your spine (or overall height) but losing a quarter inch or so following back surgery is normal.

Surgeon' call: If you're ulna is relatively long compared to your radius most upper extremity surgeons will shorten the ulna w/ tfcc debridement/ repair routinely.Other surgeons will determine the need for ulnar shortening @ the time of arthroscopy depending on findings @ the scope( my preference)...Also the shortening( if needed) can be done 'open' or arthroscopically. ? normal pressure: Some older patients start to lose balance, memory and bladder control.  Brain scans show large ventricles but brain pressure is normal.  Some can improve with a shunt, but others do not respond to surgery.  I assume he has had extensive testing to exclude other conditions.  Have faith he may improve over time.  Discuss options with his doctor.

after prostatectomy, i think the average decrease was ~1 CM -- but i'd need to check the reference to make sure.

Location: Rarely can avm surgery improve short-term memory. However, if the avm is in a location to interfere with sensory input, alertness, or memory storage and retrieval, it is possible--though not likely--that surgery could help memory. Good luck!
