: Temporal arteritis has symptoms-typically headaches, not feeling well in general, etc. Bulging blood vessels without any other symptoms would not likely be temporal arteritis. The sedimentation rate is usually increased as well. A biopsy of the artery is done to confirm the diagnosis. See a doctor if you think the diagnosis is possible to have bloodwork done. Good luck!

Clenching?: Its normal for an artery to pulse.  There is blood moving through it every heart beat.  Sometimes clenching and grinding your teeth can promote inflammation around this artery, because your temporalis muscle that helps you chew or clench has the temporal artery moving through it.

Temporal arteritis: You  describe a swollen "vein" in the temple. Temporal arteritis is an inflammatory condition of uncertain ideology affecting the temporal artery and other large arteries, like the aorta. It is unlikely that you have this condition. However, the best option is to see an MD urgently, as giant cell arteritis can cause occlusion of the ophthalmic artery and blindness.  Treatment is may be needed.

The superficial: temporal artery travels near the zygomatic arch, the prominent part of the facial bones in your upper cheek. Because of being near a firm structure, it is easier to see/feel. I doubt that lying down is actually making your heart beat faster, but the rapid rate is more observable. Stress/anxiety could be causing rapid beating, but it dserves a good eval with your doctor. Doubt it is your spine.

Aberrant catotid art: You most likely have a aberrant carotid artery in the posterior pharynx.  It is nothing to worry about if you are being intubated as long as the anesthesiologist is aware of it.  You should not get a tonsillectomy unless it is absolutely necessary and done by a very experienced ENT. Good luck!  You will be fine.

The pulse could also be counted anywhere the heartbeat can be felt - neck, chest, legs, abdomen, etc.  Wrist is just easy.
