Yes: The vein is inflamed and damaged. They can reoccur but more typically wax and wane. Treated is usually with warm or cold compresses, anti- inflammatory medications, and time. If not improving after several days - see your doctor.

Worsening symptoms: if oral meds work you should improve.  Further swelling, new or worsening fever and more extensive redness are the signs of trouble.  If the oral antibiotics fail, you would need IV antibiotics.  Oral meds usually work in this setting.  Good luck.

i have had phlebitis in my wrist for the past month ( after an iv)  and am getting shooting pains up my entire arm almost like a nerve twinge. normal?

Not normal: If you've had phlebitis in a sensitive area like the wrist, there are nerves there that might 'fire off' if irritated. One month seems like a long time-so I am concerned. You should show this to a doc because there could be some sort of compression in that tight space (like a bruise/small fluid collection). It's probably pressing on a nerve in the carpal tunnel. Try raising your arm until see  doc

Phlebitis: Several reasons for phlebitis. Most common being infection. In arm with no history of trauma or inactivity, it could come from shaving in under arms and infection from the skin of underarms can travel through the lymphatic drainage to the veins daring the arm.

: Yes, thrombophlebitis denotes inflammation +/- clotting of a superficial vein and its treatment differs significantly from deep venous thrombosis as anticoagulation is usually not needed in superficial thrombophlebitis, while always needed in deep venous thrombosis.

: Phlegmon is a bacterial infection in the soft tissue- can be anywhere, armpit or other. Phlebitis is inflammation of a vein, often after an IV needle has been in for several days. No (obvious) relation to Brest cancer but need to see your doctor to fully evaluate

had phlegmon in armpit with lump. took keflex and developed a cordlike vein in the armpit. now im told heat, baby aspirin, and doxycycline until ultrasound. is phlebitis common in axillary due to abscess? any other ways to help it improve?

: It is frequent. Continue your treatment as recommended. If it swells up again, or becomes red and tender, you may need to go to the Doctor for surgical Drainage.
