is stromectol (ivermectin) a good treatment for scabies and how would i dose it if i weigh 200lbs? i was thinking of buying some online.

Ivermectin : Ivermectin is a treatment that is used to treat scabies.  Typically Permethrin cream is first choice, however.  Both require a prescription.  There is a picture of scabies on the link below.  I hope that helps.

if i treat myself with ivermectin scabies treatment and wash everything tomorrow such as clothes, sheets...won't i just get reinfected from new mites?

Not necessarily: As long as you have completely treated yourself, your belongings and close contacts, you won't necessarily get reinfected.

Reassess diagnosis: Either it's not scabies, or the source is somewhere you haven't accounted for. See your doc to explore other possibilities such as bed bugs, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, syphilis, or many other diagnoses.

i was treated for severe eczema, dermatitis, possibly scabies.  i was prescribed ivermectin and a low dose steroid.  can you explain the intense rash that surfaced 12 days into treatment all over my body? day 15 ivermectin was taken.  symptoms calmed?

Multiple conditions: You have a number of conditions which may cause an intense rash, and if there is a response to ivermecin, scabies may be under control, but may recur.

my derm can't tell if i have atypical scabies or atopical dermatitis.i get relief but not cure from  oral ivermectin and oral immuran, please help?

Hard to tell: It's hard to tell without examination. If you have (or your family) asthma, hayfever history and ezema in your childhood, the eczema you have now might be atopic dermatitis. However, if you live in a dorm, share bed with some one, and they happen to have similar itching problem, you might have scabies. Itching from scabies may linger for months after "cure". Atopic dermatitis comes and goes.

Ivermectin: After you take ivermectin, it stays in your body for a little over 4 days. Thus, after 4 days you can drink alcohol.

Can be: First line therapy for scabies is a topical scabicide.  Ivermectin (stromectol) is an oral anti-parasitic agent which has been used to treat scabies but is not fda-approved for this use and is considered second line therapy in severe cases or in patients who cannot tolerate topical agents.

i continue having new outbreaks, 44hrs after taking po ivermectin for mild scabies, is this normal? or does this mean tx has failed/isn't effective?

Consider re-exposure: Ivermectin is highly effective for scabies.  New skin lesions suggest you are having repeated exposure in your environment (such as bed, clothing, etc.).  Carefully quarantine clean clothes that have been dried on a high setting.  Consider using an insecticide "defogger" in your bedroom, and clean/dry all sheets, pillows, bed clothes at high dryer setting.

i was prescribed ivermectin 3mg tablets for 12 days to treat scabies. can i use some type of otc topical cream for the itch?

Accepted Answer

Yes: This medication can be combined with an oral steroid. Start with 1% hydrocortisone - mix a good portion with an eczema cream and spread over affected areas within 3 minutes after shower/bath. See your MD for alternative prescription strength creams if this is not helpful. Itch will stop when the body absorbs the dead mite from the skin.
