Can be identical : Occasionally a strep germ will produce a characteristic sandpaper like rose colored rash. Mono does not. Withoutb that clue they can appear identical. Testing is the main way to sort them out.

Similar but: Both cause very sore throat with swelling and fever. Both can be diagnosed readily with a rapid test. Mono rapid test is less accurate. Mono  significant systemic symptoms such as fatigue, sleepiness, nausea, and the swelling tends to be more severe and more dramatic appearing. mono long lasting: Mono last longer and has weakness and fatigue compare to strep.
Strep throat is short lasting less than 5 days.

Bacteria vs Viruses: I love this question.  Strep throat is a bacterial infection with a severe bug known as streptococcus.  It is quite debilitating and contagious.  One with strep throat usually has fever, pain, difficulty swallowing and then secondarily symptoms in the ears and with the fever, increased heart rate and some muscle aches.

: Perhaps you have a viral uri, but if you wish to check for mononucleosis, reliable testing is available.  In this day and age, a COVID-19 screen should also be included, if you have not been vaccinated.

All possible....: You need a head to toe exam, thorough history and lab work. and you need them soon. Sounds like you are quite I'll, and need to know if this is anything that needs medication, special diet, nose biopsy, ??? Please get in to your doctor this week. No urgent care or ER - you need a physician who can provide you ongoing care and close follow up.

took a throat culture today and said i either have strep throat or mono. how will i know which one i have?

One or Other or Both: You can't have either a strep throat or mononucleosis.  You can have one or the other or both.  A rapid strep test or a throat culture will tell whether or not you have a strep throat.  A mono spot test or ebv antibody panel will show whether or not you have mono.  If you have both do not take Ampicillin or Amoxicillin because either will cause a rash 90% of the time.

Poss. Viral: Referred pain to ears can occur from the throat. Ear infections have to be ruled out.
Many viruses can give such symptoms. Do have it seen again if worse.

Friends, family, etc: One gets strep throat AFTER mononucleosis for the same reason one gets strep BEFORE mono... friends, family, coworkers, etc... Strep is caused by a bacteria, transmitted by close contact such as between family members. Mono is caused by a virus, also transmitted by close contact. Both are common human conditions, which means a person can get one before the other or both at the same time.
