Azithromycin (zithromax) can be used for strep throat, but there have been several reports in the medical literature of the development of resistance to this antibiotic.

However, sore throat, sometimes fevers, frontal headache, stomach ache, vomiting and nausea, sandpapery rash are all seen.

Resistance to drugs: Strep can be resistant to a great number of antibiotics that is the problem partially caused by the overuse of antibiotic for unnecessary treatments  strep use to be best treated with Ampicillin but has become in many cases resistant. Only if your child is allergic to penicillin would Erythromycin or cephalosporin  be used.  The first choice is Ampicillin and if that is not working a switchto amox.

Fever & sore throat for more than 2 days without cold symptoms suggests possible strep. A culture is best dx.
