Food: The stool color is determined by the germs that live in the intestine and the foods and colors eaten.  Gray is ok.

No laxative: There is a huge difference between laxatives and stool softeners. First, increase the fiber in child's diet and how much water child drinks daily. If you have tried this and stool still hard, then stool softeners such as MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) can be helpful. Steer clear of actual laxatives - these can cause more problems than they solve.

i have seen long white worms in my stool. this seems to be happening often. i am waiting to be seen later in the week by a health professional. can you advise how i can stop having this problem of reoccurring worms in my stool. i work with children?

: Collect one or more worms (if that's what they are) and save them in a jar in the refrigerator -- and bring them along for your medical appointment. Good luck.

Depends...: A lot of things, ranging from a minor viral syndrome to a more serious gastrointestinal disorder (colitis).  Mucousy stools could be colitis, or inflammation of the colon.  Is blood present in the stools?   Bacterial colitis may require antibiotics.   Call your pediatrician.

Go see her doctor.: If it has been going on for a long time why are you concerned all of a sudden?
She needs to be checked by her pediatrician to know if is a problem or not.
When was the last time if ever that she saw her dentist for a checkup and tooth cleaning and Fluoride treatment?

hi. my son is 5 years old, and just now he's having difficulty passing his stool when in the bathroom and says it's big and painful. is it safe to use glycerine suppository for children in this situation? or should i take him to er?

Basics: Glycerin would be safe, but he may need an enema to help break up the material. They make a kids Fleets enema you can give at home. You may want to have him see his doctor about retraining his system with scheduled daily emptying assisted by a moisture retaining material like Miralax. It can take up to a year to fix these kids even with the best help available.

a couple months ago i passed hard stool & i felt something get irritated at opening of rectum.it felt a bit itchy too and when i wiped only had tiniest amount of red blood. i have had occasional hemorrhoids after children. should i worry about cancer?

: Although the chances of this bleeding being due to cancer are very small, the only way to know for sure that it is due to hemorrhoids is to have an exam performed. You should see your primary doctor, or a GI doctor. Good luck.

i've been diagnosed previously with a rectocele after the vaginal birth of my two children. youngest is now two. this week, starting in the evening, i started noticing pruritus ani (itching/aching inside rectum). could it be stuck stool? any tips?

Anal pruritus ?'s: Anal itching may be caused by a parasite, or by hemorrhoids . Rectocoeles do not generally cause this kind of symptom.  Best is to see your gyn physician for an exam and possibly other testing.

how to soften stools?

Accepted Answer

No other disease?: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber+water, Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... A doctor can evaluate and prescribe helpful medication too. Exercise also helps.
