Depends...: A lot of things, ranging from a minor viral syndrome to a more serious gastrointestinal disorder (colitis). Mucousy stools could be colitis, or inflammation of the colon. Is blood present in the stools? Bacterial colitis may require antibiotics. Call your pediatrician.
